Our project story
North Halifax Grammar School is a high achieving school, with ambitious, hard working students who relish a challenge and are consistently developing their academic and practical skills. To continue to deliver our excellent standard of education, we need the resources to facilitate that. Therefore, we are seeking funding for a range of technology resources to equip our Resistant Materials Room. We would like to purchase a range of tools so we can offer an excellent standard of Product Design.
Product Design teaches students key skills using sophisticated physical and digital resources to effectively prepare them for the further education and the workplace. Unfortunately, our existing equipment is unsuitable for the latest Product Design curriculum. Furthermore, the number of students opting to take the subject as a GCSE option, has fallen in recent years. Part of that could be due to the outdated stereotypes that surround the subject, as well as the uninspiring spaces available to teach and learn Product Design. We would like to increase engagement and attainment in this subject by offering up to date facilities and resources to encourage our students to learn the skills needed to excel in the Design industry.
Our project will have a positive impact on our students’ development as it will offer them an excellent standard of practical and theoretical education. It will also offer them an inspirational learning space that will encourage them to pursue careers in the Design and Engineering industry. The range of equipment we have identified will give our students opportunities to exercise a range of skills and competencies that are important in the Design workplace. It will exercise their dextrous, problem solving and lateral thinking skills as well as give them the opportunity to practically implement their theoretical skills. The project will allow us to expand our teaching and learning methods to align with the use of specialist manufacturing equipment and tools. We aim for our students to leave well equipped for any career they choose to pursue. This project will open opportunities for our students to access the Product Design industry as they will have experience of using the equipment that is prevalent in the Product Design workplace.
Furthermore, we hope that this project will foster strong relationships with the Product Design sector, allowing us to collaborate with businesses to offer work experience within the sector.
