Our project story

We have created a stimulating, fun and safe outside play environment by purchasing suitable playground equipment for our Early Years pupils to use but want to construct a canopy over some of the area. This will maximise the opportunities for outdoor learning by having some of the area under cover so that it can be used all year round and resources can be left outside whilst being protected from the weather. We currently have a "Good" Ofsted rating but want to be "Outstanding".

Many of our children spend much of their lesson times inside. We want to get our children back outside with the provision of better outdoor play facilities. Our current outdoor area has limited usage and it is not being used to its full potential as the children are not keen to use it when it is wet and windy. By constructing a canopy over part of the area we will be providing our pupils with a stimulating and exciting outdoor environment that can be used in all weathers all year round. The outdoor equipment includes outdoor gym equipment, a reading shed, a growing and digging area for our children to experience growing vegetables and a grassy area for free play. Many of these resources as well as construction equipment and role-play materials have to be put away at the end of each session meaning that learning and play are continuously interrupted. A covered area would enable children to learn outside at all times.

Access to outdoor play will positively impact our pupils as it will offer them a range of outdoor physical activity. That type of activity can aid concentration, improve behaviour and encourage team work amongst young children. It can also help develop co-ordination and can increase the self-esteem of some of our introverted pupils as working together to create something can establish a sense of achievement. Use of the outside play equipment at all times of year will also encourage social interaction and communication, bringing many of our pupils out of their shell and into collaborative work and play. Spending time outside daily instils the importance of being active within our pupils so that it becomes a natural part of their lives. The project will also improve the range of teaching and learning strategies that teachers can use with the children by giving them access to a wider range of resources.
